Though the world championship is open to all players, there are separate championships for women, under-20s and lower age groups, and seniors as well as one for computers. In 2022, he announced that he would not defend his title a fifth time, and so the 2023 championship will be played between the top two finishers of the qualifying 2022 Candidates Tournament instead: Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia and Ding Liren of China. He successfully defended the title in 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2021.
The championship was played for a 2 million prize fund between the reigning world champion Carlsen and the challenger Nepomniachtchi, who won the 2020-2021 FIDE Candidates Tournament.
